As I look back, I cannot recall specifically teaching my own three children to follow the golden rule. Hopefully, I did that at least by example because their personal and professional behavior today is a reflection of that lesson having been learned.
In contrast, I do very vividly recall specifically teaching my grandchildren exactly what the golden rule is and that God wants us to follow it. In fact, my grandchildren were the inspiration for this book. Part of the inspiration also came from their reaction to the first two books that I wrote. Their question was exactly why I did not write about them in my books since I wrote about two of our pets in one of them? From that point I started reflecting back to some summer babysitting days when they were small. As I recalled the enjoyment of those days (I would not trade one second of those times for anything) I also recalled a small amount of frustration and conflict that had to be dealt with at times. The three youngest are so close in age and so close that some sibling rivalry existed between cousins. One of the major ways that I tried to keep the peace was by teaching them to follow the golden rule. I am certain they got quite tired of hearing it as they will probably tell you to this day! Now that they are older it is with great gratitude and pleasure that I observe them actually living the golden rule and showing kindness to their peers and others in their daily lives.
Biblical Inspiration: Ephesians 4:32 – Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Lesson in a Nutshell: Teach your children good and moral behavior by example. Do as I say and not as I do never works!
