So, here we are back again. It is now three years later and there I was doing something that I really loved.
However, through a different set of circumstances, it became obvious that I was no longer where I was supposed to be. Once again, I moved to a position and a place that I didn’t seek. I moved from little ones (Grades 1-3) to high school (at that time grades 10-12).
Continuing with my belief in the importance of being proactive, showing students they have value, and building self-esteem, it was my desire to change some preconceived ideas about a counselor’s office.
I did not want the counselor’s office to be a place where you only went for negative reasons. We needed a “revolving door policy” in which it would be a safe place to be called to for helpful positive reasons and open to anyone for anything at any time. It needed to be a place full of warmth, caring, and assistance.
I don’t know exactly how to label the person in the outer office at that time. Her official title was secretary but she was always much more than that. She was the glue that made everything work smoothly. She was secretary, receptionist, office manager and most importantly warm and welcoming person. Her presence was absolutely essential in developing that culture. She was one of the most caring and compassionate individuals that you could ever meet. Socio-economic backgrounds, race, none of that mattered. She loved those students and always went the extra mile to help them.
We kept candy in the office for everyone who came by (candy corn and peanuts in the fall and always candy canes during the holidays). I kept snacks and food in my office as well. Students learned that they were welcome to drop by anytime if just to get a candy cane, a hug, or maybe just a warm, loving smile or a kind word from the secretary.
Biblical Inspiration: I Corinthians 16:14 – Let all that you do be done in love.
Biblical Inspiration: Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Lesson in a Nutshell: Even if it is not your choice, always do your best and give everything you have to give to the job you have been given. If God put you in that place, there is work there that he wants done by you.
