To review, I had a scholarship to attend college in a nearby town and everyone believed that I would get an education degree and become a teacher. However, my best friend since first grade and I were “rebels”. She went off to major in drama with dreams of becoming an actress and I went off thinking that I would major in journalism and become a writer. Have you ever heard the saying that “We make plans and God laughs”? Well, in this case God definitely had a huge chuckle because fifteen years later she and I were teaching next door to each other in a junior high school!
It is interesting to note that she did get that degree in drama but decided that she no longer wanted to pursue the original dream. Instead she got her teaching certifications and spent almost thirty years in a classroom. Rather than on an actual stage or screen, she used the talent the Lord had given her in a classroom performing and entertaining students on a daily basis teaching them grammar, English, and later drama. They had so much fun in that classroom that they barely realized how much they were learning. She had a profound influence on thousands of students and their future before she retired due to illness and later passed away from breast cancer. The Lord changed her pathway from seeking wealth and fame to teaching and to a life that truly made a difference!
Well, I did tell you this is a bit of a history lesson and I’m not through yet. Next time we will look at how I got from a planned major in journalism to a totally different tract.
Biblical Inspiration: Proverbs 3: 5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Lesson in a nutshell: Teach your children what God says about plans for the future and to lean on him for making decisions about their future.
