I just can’t move on without sharing more of the friend that I still miss every day.
Another example of our friendship mishaps was the gymnasium window episode. We had a study hall together right after lunch every day. We were bored to death in there because we couldn’t talk and laugh and have fun together so we worked out a plan of action (her idea of course but I went along). Every day we asked permission to go to the bathroom which was located in another building (the gymnasium) in which the boy’s basketball team was practicing at that time. We did this for weeks but encountered a problem because we had to walk through the gym to get to the combination dressing/restroom.
We were concerned because we kept getting this “look” from the basketball coach. Being the thoughtful students that we were (Ha) we decided it would be very helpful to the coach if we did not walk through and interrupt his practice. Our solution was naturally, not to stay where we belonged, but rather to climb in the outside windows to the dressing room!
Well, that was a great plan which worked well for a few days until the principal happened to look out his office window and observe our “good deed”. That did not end well.
I never had the confidence to do anything out of the ordinary and she was never afraid to do the wild and crazy. Thirty years later we made a trip to Branson and were circling in the crowded parking lot looking for a parking space. We saw someone leaving a couple of rows over and before you could blink an eye, she jumped out, ran over, laid down, and spread eagled in the spot to save it for us. She was an absolutely out of the box quick witted character who was a blast to be around.
There was never a dull moment with her. We attended a Texas Ranger baseball game one time and a fan spilled a huge beer all over my brother in-law. As he sat there drenched in beer, she calmly commented, “And that’s what they mean when they say this Bud’s for you.”
Next time we will explore some other childhood memories that led to the creation of “Abby the Dog and Tigger the Cat”.
